It was a long hard fight for the PacWest team today, but Scott Dixon and Mauricio Gugelmin managed a couple of top-ten finishes for the second time this season. Dixon found trouble early with two separate contact incidents, neither of which damaged his Toyota Reynard. With excellent pit stops for both drivers, Gugelmin and Dixon picked their way through the field, aided by several accidents from their fellow drivers. Based on his race efforts, Dixon was awarded the Mario Andretti Most Outstanding Rookie Award as voted on by members of the media.
SCOTT DIXON - # 18 NTN PACWEST TOYOTA
Finishing position: 5th Total Laps: 95
"We had a pretty good run today," said Dixon. "We got into a lot of trouble at the beginning of the race with contact on two different occasions, but we managed to keep the car intact and bring it home safely. My NTN car was very well balanced all day but we really had to fight hard on the restarts just to maintain position. My crew was also excellent today in providing me with fast pit stops, and I want to thank NTN Bearings for being my primary sponsor for this race. These are very important points for us and hopefully we can continue on this pace in Michigan."
MAURICIO GUGELMIN - # 17 NEXTEL PACWEST TOYOTA
Finishing position: 7th Total Laps: 95
"That was a dog fight out there, and I'm happy to walk away with the points," said Gugelmin. "My Nextel Toyota was much better for the race than it has been in practice, and I can thank my crew for that. We made some much-needed changes to the car after the morning warm-up and it helped considerably. Towards the end, we really had to conserve a lot of fuel, and that made the re-starts pretty tough. I was able to hold them off though and gather a few more points."
