(Lexington, Oh) -- The PacWest Racing Group used the second day of the CART open test at Mid-Ohio to try several new "bits and pieces" on their Mercedes-Benz powered Motorola and Nextel machines today.
Track time was sacrificed as the team continually tried a combination of different new "tricks" developed by the team's engineering department.
Both drivers were in the top 10 of the 28 cars at the test in today's morning session, but were outside that mark as the development work continued in the afternoon.
Team Penske's Gil de Ferran was fastest over the two days and was followed by his teammate Helio Castroneves.
Track record holder Dario Franchitti was third fastest while Christian Fittipaldi and Max Papis completed the top five.
#18 MARK BLUNDELL - #18 MOTOROLA PACWEST MERCEDES-BENZ
"The last two days have been important for us," said Blundell.
"We had data from last year, but not all of that equates to the new cars.
"We had a reasonable run yesterday, but our track time was limited today because we swapped and changed several things.
"I think we picked up a few ideas that will help us out a little at Detroit next weekend."
#17 MAURICIO GUGELMIN -- #17 NEXTEL PACWEST MERCEDES-BENZ
"We never did any low fuel and "sticker" tire runs so our times never really reflected how good our cars were," said Gugelmin.
"We made some major changes today and I think we were heading in the right direction.
"We will adapt some of those "bits and pieces" when we return here later in the championship.
"I am sure we also picked up a few things which will be a help at Detroit next week."
The next round of the FedEx Championship Series will be held in Detroit on June 18.
