Mauricio Gugelmin Fast Facts
#17 Nextel PacWest Toyota

Mauricio Gugelmin enters the Mid-Ohio round of the Championship following a 22nd place finish at Chicago. The result was not indicative of his performance, however, as he was on pace for a top-ten result before contact ended his chances to earn championship points.

Gugelmin has four top-ten finishes so far this season, all coming after the sixth race of the season at Milwaukee.

Mauricio has eight previous starts at Mid-Ohio. 1998 was Mo's best year at the 2.258-mile course, as he started fourth and finished in the same position. The Brazilian has two other top-ten finishes, a sixth in 1995 and seventh in 1997.

Last season, Gugelmin was the top Mercedes qualifier but he exited the race with mechanical problems just past the halfway point.

Gugelmin, one of CART's most experienced drivers, is in his ninth year of FedEx Championship Series competition, and eighth full season.

Gugelmin is in his second year as President of the Championship Drivers Association.

Mauricio Gugelmin:
"Mid-Ohio is always a circuit that I look forward to every year, mainly because it is such a demanding track. I haven't done too well there lately, but I have driven to three top-ten finishes on the Ohio road course in the past, with my best being a forth place result in 98. Hopefully this year we can re-visit some of my earlier results and grab my first podium of the season. Track position is very important there, which means that qualifying well will be crucial. We need to start up front, and then use our race strategy to remain there. I know my Nextel crew will give me great pit stops, and Toyota will give me an engine that will run all day. The rest will be up to me, but I'm up for the test. My body is well rested after six races in seven weeks, and I'm ready to turn things up a notch for the ladder part of the season."

Scott Dixon Fast Facts
#18 Powerware Panasonic PacWest Toyota

The Chicago race provided PacWest rookie driver Scott Dixon with a fourth place finish, his fourth top-five result of the season, and seventh top-ten in the last nine races.

The stellar result in Chicago vaulted Dixon to sixth place in the driver's championship point standings, only four points out of fourth. Dixon, now the highest ranked Toyota pilot, also extended his lead in the Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year standings to 42 points.

Scott leads all championship contenders in laps completed, running an amazing 1583 out of the 1629 run so far this season (97.2%).

In one previous visit to Mid-Ohio (2000), Dixon competed in the Dayton Indy Lights series, qualifying eighth and charging through the field to finish in second position.

Dixon is the youngest-ever winner of a Champ Car race, scoring a victory earlier this season in Nazareth at the age of 20.

Dixon was the 2000 Dayton Indy Lights Champion with six wins, seven podiums, and one pole position, finishing the season with 155 points.

Scott Dixon: # "Even though I had some success on the short ovals this year, I'm anxious to get back to road course racing this weekend. I remember not qualifying so well there last year in Lights (eighth), but I was able to move through the field during the race and I ended up finishing second. The track suites my driving style, and I really need to get a good result to gather as many points as possible. So far I've had a pretty decent season, but running CHAMP cars at Mid-Ohio will obviously prove more challenging for me than last year. We had a pretty good test there earlier in the year, so I know we have a reliable set-up already. It will be an exciting race, and hopefully we can put on a good show and come home with a victory."
