PACWEST RACING HAS BEST FRIDAY RESULT OF SEASON
(Milwaukee, Wi) – Momentum from PacWest Racing’s first podium finish of the 2000 FedEx Championship Series at Nazareth last weekend has flowed into the first practice sessions for Sunday’s Miller Lite 225 at the Milwaukee Mile in Wisconsin.
#17 Nextel PacWest Mercedes-Benz driver Mauricio Gugelmin and #18 Motorola PacWest Mercedes-Benz driver Mark Blundell are both confident of producing strong qualifying efforts tomorrow after finishing fourth and 14th respectively overall today.
Gugelmin, who finished second in the postponed Nazareth race last Saturday, went as far to say that his car was the best he had on a Friday for at least “a couple of years”. It was also the best Friday result of the year for Mercedes-Benz with Tony Kanaan (7th) also in the top 10.
Gil de Ferran was fastest today with a 21.389-second lap and was followed by Michael Andretti (21.404s) and Helio Castroneves (21.449s).
MAURICIO GUGELMIN - # 17 NEXTEL PACWEST MERCEDES-BENZ
Morning Session: 21.793s – 9th; Afternoon: 21.468s – 4th ; Combined: 4th
“This is the best car I have had on a Friday for at least a couple of years,” said Gugelmin.
“It has been a very decent day and it almost feels weird to be this far ahead of the game on a Friday.
“The car behaved really consistently. We ran all the fuel slots and got good data for the race.
“We had a little push in the corners, but we have some good ideas on how to improve that for tomorrow’s qualifying.
“There is no doubt that this is a result of momentum from our result at Nazareth.
“I feel confident and the boys feel good and that makes a lot of difference.
“Mercedes-Benz made some big gains before Nazareth and it was only a matter of time before it started come together.
MARK BLUNDELL - # 18 MOTOROLA PACWEST MERCEDES-BENZ
Morning Session: 21.966s – 13th; Afternoon: 21.732s 11th – Combined: 14th
“That is certainly the best result for us on a Friday so far this season,” said Blundell.
“We used two different cars with two different set-ups, which is hard to do in a short session, but it paid dividends.
“We certainly have a sense of direction and that is nice on the first day of a race weekend.
“There is time left in the car and I look forward to trying to find it tomorrow.”
