Post-qualifying notes and quotes: Saturday, October 30, 1999
Mauricio Gugelmin, #17 Hollywood PacWest Mercedes-Benz 3rd in morning practice (30.867 seconds/236.641 mph) 17th in afternoon qualifying (31,462 seconds/232.166 mph)
"I'm not happy with our qualifying result, but the balance of the car is perfect. I was as free as I could be, and flat all around. We felt we could be faster - at least a 233 - but we'll just have to go back and see what we can do.
"The most important thing, especially in this wind, is to have a car that's consistent throughout the race and good in traffic. Yesterday we did some running on full tanks, and we're confident that we'll have a solid car for the race.
"At a place like this, the car is so trimmed out that you'll try all kinds of silly things to go faster, You know, if I could cut my head off to gain some speed, we'd probably try it!"
Mark Blundell, #18 Motorola PacWest Mercedes-Benz 11th in morning practice (31.203 seconds/234.093 mph) 18th in afternoon qualifying (31.500 seconds/231.886 mph)
"We were flat all the way around the track. The car is well-balanced, and we're completely trimmed out. It's just unfortunate that we were caught out a bit by the weather conditions. It's like golf; when your partner makes his shot it's calm, but when you go out, the wind has picked up and it hurts your game. There wasn't much we could do, but I'm still confident for the race.
"The car has been quick all weekend, and we know this track - we won here in 1997. I started eleventh in that race, so we're not too concerned for tomorrow. 500 miles is a long way, and I think we have the car to go the distance."
