CART COMMUNITY LAUNCHES SECOND ANNUAL HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE
THE international motor racing community has been called upon to show their festive spirit and support the second annual CART Cares '99 Holiday Food Drive.
The drive was launched this week and will culminate with PacWest driver Mauricio Gugelmin towing Santa's sleigh into Indianapolis' Monument Circle on December 17, where a donation of food and cash will be presented.
Gleaners, a partner of America's Second Harvest, will accept the gifts and, in turn, assist 300 central Indiana agencies that provide food to those in need on the eve of the festive season.
Last year's inaugural event resulted in more than 750 gallons of food and more than $2000 in cash being donated to the appeal, but organizers are hoping to smash that mark this year with the help of local, national and international media, the generous CART community and the general public.
PacWest's Vice-President Business Operations, Steve Fusek, says that dozens of food items have already arrived at PacWest's shop at 4001 Methanol Lane in Indianapolis.
"Christmas is a time for giving and putting this food drive together is the least PacWest Racing and CART can do to support those who are in need, especially at this time of the year," said Fusek. "We are looking to the entire CART fraternity, especially those teams, businesses and fans in Indiana, to get behind this year's event. "Last year was a nice starting point, but we know that we can produce better results for the needy as we progress with this year's drive during the next month."
Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is a not-for-profit organization established in 1980 and its purpose is to collect and distribute food to nonprofit agencies which feed the hungry in the state of Indiana.
CART Chairman and CEO, Andrew Craig, says that 'CART Cares '99' provides an opportunity for racing fans everywhere to show just how much they care as we fast approach the festive season.
"We are well aware that the CART family is a very generous one and our second annual Holiday Food Drive again gives us an opportunity to show that," said Craig. "I encourage all our teams, sponsors and fans to display their support for this worthwhile cause and make a donation of food or cash. "The great thing about this drive is that it gives everyone a chance to be involved by donating something as simple as a can of beans or a check as large as you like."
The President and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank Indiana, Pamela Altmeyer, said she was delighted that PacWest, CART and the entire racing community had again decided to support the needy with the annual "CART Cares" program.
"The racing community is a very generous one," said Altmeyer. "It is great to see PacWest and CART helping those who are being left in the dust of this booming economy."
Gugelmin, who has re-signed to drive for PacWest in 2000, had trouble getting used to last year's PacWest Racing food drive vehicle - a retired Champ Car specially redesigned for the campaign.
The car was fitted with its own pair of reindeer on the front wings, snowflake wheels and a sleigh complete with Santa and elves.
"Santa caused a bit of oversteer in the corners," said Gugelmin, after towing the sleigh into Indianapolis' Monument Circle. "We're going to work on perfecting the street setup first, and then we'll see how the car handles on the roof tops."
WHERE DO I MAKE A DONATION? Non-perishable food and toiletry items and checks/money orders for the appeal can be sent or delivered, until December 15, 1999 to:
PacWest Racing Group 4001 Methanol Lane Indianapolis Indiana 46268 USA
* Tax deductible cash/check/money order donations should be made payable to GLEANERS FOOD BANK and receipts will be returned accordingly.
