HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Feb. 9, 2000 -- Nike Racing's family of world-class race drivers and teams expanded today with the addition of four-time CART champions, Target Chip Ganassi Racing Teams, Inc.
As the 2000 racing season begins, Nike will provide specially designed footwear and apparel for the defending champions of both the CART and NASCAR Winston Cup series. In addition to defending CART champion Juan Montoya and former champ Jimmy Vasser, "1999 Driver of the Year" and 1999 Winston Cup champion Dale Jarrett was one of five drivers who launched Nike Racing in August of 1999.
"We are thrilled for the teams and drivers who participated in our program in 1999, and for Dale Jarrett and the Robert Yates #88 crew's championship," said Mac McDevitt, director of Nike Racing. "Now we have the opportunity to work with a four-time championship organization, Chip Ganassi Racing.
"This move reinforces our performance position of learning from the best athletes in the world of racing and helping to make them better," McDevitt continued. "Ganassi knows one way -- the winning way -- and we are honored to bring innovation in racing apparel and footwear to his race teams."
Financial terms were not disclosed. In addition to race-day and race-week footwear, Nike Racing will supply uniforms to the Ganassi drivers and crews, and Ganassi Racing will sell authentic and replica apparel designed by Nike at their track retail sites this spring.
"Nike is one of the most respected companies in the history of sporting goods," said TeamTarget owner Chip Ganassi. "It's a privilege to have them join our team, as we battle for our fifth straight title."
In addition to 1999 NASCAR Champion Dale Jarrett, 1999 CART champion Juan Montoya and 1996 CART champion Jimmy Vasser, Nike Racing includes Bobby Labonte, who finished second to Jarrett in last year's NASCAR points chase, and Tony Stewart, who finished fourth and was named the series' Rookie of the Year. Adam Petty, competing in the Busch Grand National Series, and CART champion Al Unser Jr., who has moved to the Indy Racing League, round out the Nike Racing squad.
