PacifiCare Back with NHR for 2004 Champ Car World Series
CYPRESS, Calif., March 9, 2004 - After a successful 2003 season both on and off the track, PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. (NYSE: PHS) announced it will continue to sponsor Newman/Haas Racing (NHR) and racecar driver Bruno Junqueira for the 2004 Champ Car World Series season.
NHR, co-owned by acclaimed actor Paul Newman and legendary racing entrepreneur Carl A. Haas, is a four-time champion in the Champ Car World Series (1984, 1991, 1993 and 2002). Junqueira was runner-up in the title hunt in 2003 after winning two races and two pole positions.
PacifiCare, one of the nation's largest consumer health organizations, entered motor sports in 2003 with its sponsorship of NHR as well as Champ Car World Series races in Long Beach, Denver and Milwaukee. This year, PacifiCare will serve as associate sponsor of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach (April 18) and as official sponsor of the Centrix Financial Grand Prix of Denver (August 15).
In addition, PacifiCare will extend its role as the exclusive and "Official Health Care Provider" for the entire 2004 Champ Car World Series season by offering health insurance benefits and related services to Champ Car drivers and NHR employees nationwide.
"We were impressed not only with PacifiCare's sponsorship of the Champ Car World Series but also its presence both on and off the racetrack," said Haas. "PacifiCare's generous support of our shared philanthropic endeavors showed us that PacifiCare is a company that backs up its words with action. We look forward to a victorious 2004 series for PacifiCare and Newman/Haas Racing."
PacifiCare has planned charity programs in 2004 that will support Dream Foundation and The Painted Turtle Camp. Dream Foundation works to enhance the quality of life for individuals and families battling terminal illnesses. Now in its tenth year, Dream Foundation has granted thousands of dreams to adults who are emotionally, financially and physically devastated by terminal illness.
PacifiCare will donate $150,000 to Dream Foundation and will also grant "Race Dreams" to terminally ill guests of Dream Foundation at six of the race events this year. Recipients will represent the foundation at Champ Car World Series races and enjoy a thrilling day at the racetrack. They will spend the day with the NHR organization and driver Junqueira, and will be treated to a behind-the-scenes tour and a pace-car ride. They will also get to watch the race from a luxury suite.
PacifiCare will also donate $1.5 million to The Painted Turtle Camp, the most recent addition to Paul Newman's family of Hole in the Wall Camps for children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions. It is the only multi-disease medical camp on the West Coast. The donation will be used to build the camp's state-of-the-art "Well Shell" medical facility.
"The 2003 race season proved to us that Newman/Haas Racing and PacifiCare make a winning team," said Howard Phanstiel, chairman and chief executive officer of PacifiCare Health Systems. "We believe our partnership with Carl Haas, Paul Newman and NHR will help us continue to enhance the PacifiCare brand by being associated with a team of quality and achievement. Our shared commitment to Dream Foundation and Paul Newman's The Painted Turtle Camp is embodied in PacifiCare's pledge that 'Caring is Good. Doing Something is Better.'"
"PacifiCare's race-related charitable activities reinforce its commitment of caring by doing," said Newman. "The generous support PacifiCare is providing The Painted Turtle Camp will help us offer children with serious illnesses and life-threatening conditions a place to go where they can just be themselves. I appreciate PacifiCare's support, and I know that the kids do also."
