CHAMPCAR/CART: New Promoters for Rio
Motorsport News International San Paulo, Brazil (August 4, 1998) Former World Driving Champions Emerson Fittipaldi and Nelson Piquet, have obtained the rights to manage and promote all events at Jacaripagua from the mayor of Rio de Janeiro.

San Paulo, Brazil (August 4, 1998) Former World Driving Champions Emerson Fittipaldi and Nelson Piquet, have obtained the rights to manage and promote all events at Jacaripagua from the mayor of Rio de Janeiro. The deal, which has yet to be announced, is expected to be for ten years. Fittipaldi and Piquet will partner with PPE Empreendimentos e Participagues and Projeto S/A.
In addition to motorsport events at Emerson Fittipaldi Speedway, located at the Nelson Piquet International Raceway, musical concerts are planned as well as the addition of a museum, a restaurant, shops and a night club. A racing theme is planned for each of the new additions.
Plans include upgrading the track with a lighting system in order to hold night races. It was suggested that a CART race may be held under the lights in the future.
PPE will install a large (30,000 square meters) automobile sales store, at the track. Fiat has been discussed as the marque for the new store. Prospective customers will be able to run test laps on the circuit before purchasing their new car.
The promoter's lease is for ten years, with a ten year renewal upon approval of the mayor.
Also planned are schools for karts and cars. "We want to make Jacarepagua become one of the best racing places in the world, and we want to encourage Brazilians young guys to go racing." said Fittipaldi.
