Tony Kanaan and his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard will start Saturday's Firestone Firehawk 500 from inside the fifth row after qualifying today at Twin Ring Motegi. He toured the 1.546-mile oval in 26.667 seconds (an average of 209.112 mph), which was ninth-fastest overall among 24 qualifiers today. Juan Montoya earned the pole position with a time of 26.237 (212.540 mph).
Saturday's race, Round Five on this year's 20-event CART FedEx Championship Series, is set for noon, local time (11 p.m. EDT Friday), with an ABC-TV tape-delayed broadcast on tap for Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT.
"Our main concern today was to be sure we have a good race car. We didn't do anything fancy for qualifying. Our thinking was that if we didn't have a car that would end up first on the grid, then let's make sure we're in good shape for Saturday. There was too much headwind on the front straightaway for my liking. But that's the same for everybody, even though I'm convinced the wind picked up big-time during my run! I'm very happy with the car. It's definitely a better race car than a qualifying car this weekend. I tried as hard as I could and we ended up where we did. Our goal tomorrow, first of all, is to get to the end. We didn't finish two races in a row so I really want to finish. Morris has had a knack for giving me an excellent car on race day. We had a great car at Homestead. We had a great car at Rio. If all goes well, we'll be there at the end and hopefully somewhere in the top five. Maybe even better than that!"
