First oval session at Motegi is okay for Max Papis and Sigma Autosport Team.
MOTEGI, Japan - While it wasn't a dark and stormy night, it wasn't exactly a bright, sunshiny day during the first day of practice for the Bridgestone Potenza 500, at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit.
For Sigma Autosport driver Max Papis, it was a day of improvements despite the dreary day as he drove on an oval track for the first time this season. During the morning session, Papis completed only 21 laps as the #22 Sigma Autosport Lola-Ford/Cosworth underwent some ratio changes. His fastest time of that session was 26.876 seconds (207.352 mph).
Papis made the most of his opportunity in the afternoon practice as he completed 58 laps, and whittled his time down to a 26.374 (211.299 mph), which puts him within striking distance of a top five effort.
Final qualifying for the Bridgestone Potenza 500 begins at 1:45 p.m. local time.
"Considering this is the first time out on an oval for me and Sigma Autosport this season, I don't think we have done a bad job. Overall, I think we still have to improve, but we have been developing a lot throughout the sessions and that shows with our times getting lower. We will need to do that for qualifying tomorrow. A goal of ours is to get in the top ten in qualifying and then our focus will be on the race pace which we've done quite well as of late." - Max Papis, Sigma Autosport Driver
