Papis gives his maximum best during qualifying for the Bridgestone Potenza 500.
MOTEGI, Japan - Sigma Autosport driver Max Papis said he gave it his best during qualifying for the Bridgestone Potenza 500 at the Twin Ring Motegi.
Nobody would argue the point with Papis, who came off a stunning third place finish at Long Beach nearly two weeks ago.
Papis, 32, of Miami, Fla., drove his #22 Sigma Autosport Rockwell FirstPoint Contact Lola-Ford/Cosworth to a quick qualifying lap of 26.655 seconds (209.071 mph) around the 1.548-mile oval track.
Papis will start the race on the inside of the ninth row, alongside Shinji Nakano. Papis will be looking to continue his streak of points-paying finishes, which is now at eight straight races dating back to The American Memorial at EuroSpeedway, in Lausitz, Germany last year. Currently, it is the longest streak among Champ Car drivers.
The Bridgestone Potenza 500 is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. local time and will be played on SPEED Channel on a tape-delayed basis beginning at noon Eastern Time, Saturday. The race is set for 201 laps.
"I gave it my best today in qualifying. This morning (during practice) we were tenth fastest where it counted in Turn Two. Unfortunately, we don't have a qualifying engine, but we worked really hard on the race set-up and I'm really pleased with our run because we did a very good job. We were not very fast on the straights, but the car handled exactly as we wanted today and for tomorrow's race I'm sure it will be a different deal. We will definitely give it the `maximum' attack." - Max Papis, Sigma Autosport Driver
