Today was Mario's 3rd Champ Car start and his first on an oval in this series. Dominguez ran as high as fourth position in today's race before being assessed a drive-through penalty by CART for an alleged late entry into the pit lane on his final pit stop.
The Herdez Competition pit crew battled all day to maintain quick pit stop times after the pneumatic jacks that lift the car for the tire changes failed on the car's second time into pit lane. For the remaining five stops, the crew manually raised the car which, while effective, is slower than the usual method.
Mario Domínguez - Driver
"I'm really disappointed in one way with today's result because I'm sure we had a top-five finish in our hands. When you consider that we started in 19th place and were running strongly in fifth, it's almost unbelievable. But the crew did a great job all day long on the pit stops so I have to be happy with that. And the guys gave me a great car to drive. I'm happy to leave here with some points in the championship. "
Keith Wiggins - Managing Director
"Going into the race, we had some concerns about our starting position. But, just like in Monterrey, Mario drove a great race and really put those concerns to rest. We were disappointed with the time we lost in the second pit stop when the jacks failed, but the crew recovered really well. By the final pit stops, the times were virtually the same time as if we had our pneumatic system. We had a good pit strategy and a great car - for sure, we had earned a top five finish. I have to say that we're really disappointed that CART saw fit to penalize us for an infraction we're clear that Mario did not commit. In the scheme of things, it's pretty minor and has no safety-related issues. That close to the end of the race and running that well, it's bitterly disappointing."
After returning to the United States this week, the CART FedEx Championship Series will resume at the historic Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisconsin, May 30 to June 2.
