TAGLIANI MATCHES CAREER HIGH WITH 2ND-PLACE FINISH -- Player's/Indeck driver Alex Tagliani finished 2nd in the Bridgestone Potenza 500 at Twin Ring Motegi, equaling his career-best finish established at Toronto last year. Tagliani, who started the race from 12th on the grid, has now scored four top-five finishes in his last five starts, including a pair of third place results at Australia and Fontana to close the 2001 season. Tagliani's runner-up result is also the best for the Player's team since the late Greg Moore recorded back-to-back 4th-place finishes in 1998 and 1999. Polesitter Bruno Junquiera led 54 laps en route to capturing his second career victory [Road America -- 2001], while Dario Franchitti finished 3rd. Tagliani's teammate, Patrick Carpentier, turned in his best performance of the season with a 4th-place finish, while Team Rahal driver Michel Jourdain, Jr. recorded his third consecutive top five result by finishing 5th.
JOURDAIN, JR. MOVES INTO SOLE POSSESSION OF SECOND PLACE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP -- Team Rahal driver Michel Jourdain, Jr., moved into sole possession of 2nd place in the drivers' championship following his 5th-place finish in the Bridgestone Potenza 500. Jourdain, who's 32 championship points already surpass his previous career-high of 30 set last season through 20 races, trails Dario Franchitti [34 points] by two points heading into the race at Milwaukee on June 2nd. Jourdain is the only driver who has finished 5th or better in each of the first three races this season, and now has four career top-five results [Michigan -- 3rd, Monterrey -- 4th, Long Beach -- 5th, Motegi -- 4th].
DOMINGUEZ SCORES FIRST CAREER CHAMP CAR POINTS -- Rookie Mario Dominguez scored his first career Champ Car points for Herdez Competition with his 11th-place finish in the Bridgestone Potenza 500. Dominguez's two championship points also give him the early lead in the CART Rookie of the Year standings over Townsend Bell, who crashed hard into Turn Three and failed to score any points.
SPARK PLUGS -- Sigma Autosport driver Max Papis' streak of scoring championship points in consecutive races ended at eight after he finished 18th at Motegi [mechanical] ... Alex Tagliani's and Patrick Carpentier's 2nd- and 4th-place finishes, respectively, were career bests for both drivers at the Twin Ring Motegi.
