Kenny Brack, the last driver to attempt a qualifying run on Friday and the fastest driver all week, added drama to the session at Twin Ring Motegi this afternoon when the engine in his Shell-Ford let go as the Swede took the green flag for the beginning of his qualifying run.

With only seven minutes remaining in the session, the Shell team rolled out the team's 8X car and Brack had one lap to catch Montoya who sat atop the speed charts. Brack gave a valiant effort in the back-up car laying down a time landing him outside row one for tomorrow's race.

Had Brack's team not been able to prepare the car in seven minutes the Swede would have been relegated to starting tomorrow's race from the back of the field.

KENNY BRACK -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 2nd

THAT WAS QUITE AN EFFORT TO PULL IT ALL BACK TOGETHER, GET IN THE BACK UP CAR AND POST THE SECOND FASTEST TIME . . .

"It's Friday isn't it! I don't know what is going on. Friday's have not been our day all year. I am very happy. The Shell crew did a great job with the spare car. I just had to go out and drive it. It was not as good as the primary car because we didn't have new tires on it, but it was a good lap."

WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND AFTER THE ENGINE LET GO AS YOU CROSSED THE START LINE TO TAKE YOUR FIRST FAST LAP?

"Actually, I kind of suspected something was going on. I was talking to my engineers after the session and the straight line speeds were not there. I told them that I think the engine might be ready to expire. We decided that we couldn't do anything about it. The car is great and everyone has done a great job. The Ford engine obviously has a lot of power and the package is great."

WHAT IS YOUR STRATEGY GOING TO BE ON THE START? ARE YOU GOING TO GO AFTER MONTOYA ON THE FIRST LAP?

"We will have to wait and see. The race isn't won on the first lap. I can't say enough about the package and I think it's the one to beat."

MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 12th

YOU SEEM TO BE QUITE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE RUN . .

"It was terrible. We sucked."

KENNY HAS BEEN QUICK ALL WEEKEND BUT YOU SEEM TO BE STRUGGLING A BIT. DO YOUR DRIVING STYLES COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER ENOUGH THAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM EACH OTHER?

"I think that by this time I should be better than Kenny. We have a lot of experience but we are not putting the experience it in the right place."

ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 15th

"My car was very balanced all the way around but I had no power. I have no idea what happened. For some reason I just didn't have the speed down the straights. It's a bit of a mystery. We are going to have to see what that was all about."

NOTE: The problem on the #40 Tecate/Quaker State Ford was diagnosed as a dislodged turbo inlet scoop resulting in loss of boost pressure.

ROBERTO MORENO -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 4th

"The car is fantastic. We made no tricks to get the car free. We have a very stable car. John Ward and Ed Nathman, my engineers, did a great job again and I feel confident about tomorrow."

AT 300 MILES, IS THIS A RACE YOU HAVE TO APPROACH TACTICALLY OR IS IT A SPRINT RACE?

"It's a tactical race for sure."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- Big Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 8th

"It seem to always be the same old story in qualifying. Hopefully we will have a good car for the race."

YOU SEEM TO HAVE STRONG RACES HERE. DO YOU THINK IT WILL BE THE SAME TOMORROW?

"Hopefully we can get the car as good in the race as we have had here in the past."

CART RULED YESTERDAY ON YOUR PIT ROAD INCIDENT IN RIO AND HAVE STRIPPED YOU OF FOUR CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS AND THE TEAM'S PRIZE MONEY. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

"I am really disappointed in the way things came down. I think there were people that pushed for (the penalty) other than Kirk Russell."

WILL THERE BE AN APPEAL? "They say that you can't appeal it. I don't know what Carl (Haas) is going to do."

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big Kmart/Route 66 Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 6th

"I was expecting little more out of the car. But tomorrow is going to be a long race. We have a very long race ahead of us. It's not going to be easy. It is going to be very important to finish the race tomorrow."

YOU HAVE RACED HERE IN JAPAN QUITE A BIT EARLIER IN YOUR CAREER. IS THIS RACE SPECIAL FOR YOU?

"Yeah, it's special. I still have a lot of fans down here and I like coming
over here. It would be great to do well here tomorrow."

MEMO GIDLEY -32- Player's Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 16th

AFTER YOUR RUN CART FLEW THE YELLOW FOR DEBRIS, WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE THE REMNANTS OF A BIRD. DID YOU SEE IT OUT THERE?

"I guess the bird didn't get the notice we are racing here today. Well, the
bird wouldn't get out of my way and I couldn't change my line. The car is
pretty good. We could have used some more time, especially with my lack of
track time here. I think the car will be good for the race tomorrow."

HOW UNNERVING IS IT TO SEE SOMETHING, A BIRD OR WHATEVER, ON YOUR LINE WHEN YOU ARE OUT THERE?

"Well he who is biggest wins. I didn't have a problem with it. I knew it was a pretty small bird and I was not going to dodge it, that's for sure."

ALEX TAGLIANI -33- Player's Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 10th

"This morning the car was pretty good. I don't know if it was the wind or the weather but the car felt much different."

YOU HAVE TO BE VERY HAPPY SO FAR THIS SEASON. YOU HAVE BEEN IN POSITION TO WIN IN THE FIRST TWO OVAL RACES THIS SEASON, THAT HAS TO GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE FOR TOMORROW, DOESN'T IT?

"The Player's team has given me a very good car all in the past races. This race is going to be long and I think if the car is consistent we will be there tomorrow."

TAKUYA KUROSAWA -19- MTCI Ford-Cosworth - Qualified 23rd

"We had some oversteer in the car which we struggled with a bit."

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE COMPETING AGAIN IN FRONT OF THE HOME CROWD?

"It feels good to be back."
