CART FedEx Championship Series
Bridgestone Potenza 500, Twin Ring Motegi, Japan
April 25-27, 2002
Race Distance: 500 kilometers or 311.148 miles (201 laps around the 1.548-mile oval).
Potenza Race Tires Supplied: Eight sets of dry-condition tires ("slicks") per car, meaning Bridgestone shipped some 700 race tires to Japan for use this weekend. Produced at the Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio, this specification of Potenza racing radial is destined to log plenty of frequent flier miles in 2002. Bridgestone Motorsport engineers have designated this all-new compound/construction oval tire for use at the two European races as well as Japan.
The Official Tire of CART: Bridgestone joins the FedEx Championship Series in 2002 as the Official Tire of CART and, as such, will supply all teams with Bridgestone Potenza racing radials. While it is Bridgestone's first year in this series, the tire manufacturer boasts an enviable racing heritage spanning four decades.
Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Motorsports, Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire, LLC: "Needless to say, this is an extremely important race for Bridgestone since it is title sponsor of a CART event for the first time. Many Bridgestone executives and associates from the Tokyo corporate headquarters will be on hand this weekend, and this will be their first occasion to see the Potenza race tires compete in a CART competition. Our motorsports program takes great pride in being able to showcase the abilities of the tires to our fellow Bridgestone compatriots and all Japanese racing fans in attendance. We view this as another excellent opportunity to increase the global exposure of the Bridgestone brand, although Bridgestone has long been a trusted name in Japan. Certainly, tire performance will be of utmost importance this weekend as the Champ cars venture onto an oval for the first time this season. Bridgestone Motorsport engineers have developed a totally new tire compound formula that they are convinced will deliver the speed, consistency and durability mandated by the competing teams. This new compound already has been tested extensively at the similar intermediate oval in Homestead, Fla., with very positive feedback from the teams involved. We are quite confident the drivers can count on their Potenza tires to possess the grip and stability necessary to run hard, run long and run fast, and to help deliver another exciting race on the Twin Ring oval."
