Roberto Moreno took his first ever Champ Car victory Sunday on the shore of Lake Erie. The 41-year-old Brazilian led 91 of the 100 laps at the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland. It was Moreno's first win since he won twelve years ago in a Formula 3000 car.

Moreno was coming off a strong but disappointing second at Portland in which fueling problems cost him a win, but gave him the lead in the championship point standings.

Moreno started from the pole and pulled away from the field after two early yellows. Kenny Brack, who finished second, was cut short because he had to conserve fuel. Brack was the only driver to mount a challenge for the lead.

A tearful Moreno almost lost a twelve second lead, "I was crying with five laps to go, I started thinking about winning the race, and you shouldn't do that. Then suddenly I said, 'I gotta get going!' and I woke up again. Once Kenny got within two seconds of me, everything dried out," he said.

Brack was able to cut the lead down to.826 seconds at the finish. Cristiano da Matta finished third 1.977 seconds behind Moreno.

Moreno now leads the CART points by 22 points over second place Michael Andretti. He will look to make it back-to-back wins in two weeks at Ontario Place, Toronto.
