Tough day for Tracy and Franchitti in Montreal.
Montreal, Quebec (August 23, 2002) - Despite posting promising lap times during Friday's opening practice session for the Molson Indy Montreal, problems forced both Team KOOL Green drivers Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy to shortcut their afternoon provisional qualifying attempt and left the drivers in fourteenth and sixteenth position respectively. Franchitti turned a fast lap of 1:20.820 seconds (120.668 mph) around the 2.707-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, while Tracy marked a best lap of 1:20.982 seconds (120.427 mph).
Cristiano da Matta was quickest in Friday's opening qualifying session posting a fastest lap of 1:19.465 seconds (122.726 mph). Scott Dixon was second fastest recording a time of 1:19.755 seconds (122.280 mph), while Kenny Brack was third with a best lap of 1:19.873 seconds (122.099 mph).
Paul Tracy was sixth quickest during morning practice but saw his qualifying effort come to an abrupt halt seven laps into the afternoon session when the gear shift lever of his #26 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone broke off in his hand. Franchitti who was seventh in morning practice, fared no better, and retired after ten qualifying laps with brake problems.
Tomorrow's CART FedEx Champ Car schedule starts off with practice at 10:00 a.m. EDT and will be followed by the final qualifying session of the weekend at 1:45 p.m. Speed Channel will broadcast the qualifying period live starting at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
Paul Tracy - #26 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"This is very disappointing for me. Montreal is an event that is extremely important to me and we didn't get the job done today. We had some problems with the brakes overheating on our first run. The KOOL car is really good, I'm just losing time when the brakes lock up. On my second run we had another problem, the gear shift lever broke off in my hand and we didn't have enough time to fix it or bring out the back up car. It's been a tough day."
John Anderson - Team KOOL Green Consultant
"We have an overall problem with brakes and heading into the hairpin his rear tires kept locking up. It looks like we might have misread the track conditions. We were about to kick off our second segment of qualifying and the gear shift broke and the damage was too extensive for us to continue the session. It's a very disappointing situation, especially since it's our first time here. We expected to be right up there considering this morning's performance. All we can do is prepare for tomorrow."
Dario Franchitti -- #27 KOOL Honda-Lola-Bridgestone
"We had braking problems the whole session and I'm struggling to get a time out of the KOOL car the way it is. We have to look at what I'm trying to do with the car because it is not allowing me to do what I want. Either we're going to have to change the car to adapt to my style or I'm going to have to change to what the car is doing. We're struggling a lot right now and we're going to have to work hard tonight to fix it."
Kyle Moyer, Team KOOL Green Team Manager:
"We thought we were a lot better than this. We're having a problem with the brakes now, the front ones keep locking up. We figured we'd be in the top six and then when we look up and see fourteenth; well it makes us wonder what we're doing. We'll go back and evaluate the situation and try to get back near the front."
