Vasser Eighth in Molson Indy Montreal Friday Qualifying; Gonzalez Suffers Session Setback

MONTREAL (August 27, 2004) -- Champ Car qualifying for the third-annual Molson Indy Montreal saw 1996 Series Champion Jimmy Vasser (#12 Gulfstream Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) put up a top time of 1:22.620 (118.039 mph) around the spectacular 2.709-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the eighth fastest time of the day, while his teammate Roberto Gonzalez (#21 NII Holdings, Inc. Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) suffered a clutch mishap that regulated the Mexican's drive to no further than the exit of his pit box.

Vasser began the session strong and ran as high as sixth on the scoring sheets, but the red flag flew when Mario Dominguez lost control and spun into the tire barriers, bringing out the checkereds and robbing Vasser of his fastest lap.

"It went red right as I did my fastest lap, which would have moved us up into at least seventh position," said Vasser, who is scheduled to make a Champ Car record 193rd consecutive start this Sunday. "We went out on the alternate tire for our last stint in the session, and the tire proved to be different. The good news is that we definitely have more in the Gulfstream car, that's for sure. Hopefully the changes we make tonight will translate into speed, and we can move up tomorrow."

Vasser's Mexican counterpart Gonzalez had a frustrating Friday in his first visit to Montreal, as mechanical gremlins got to his 750hp Lola before it left the pit box.

"We went out in the pre-qualifying warm up session, but the car stalled and we started having some problems," said Gonzalez, who was unable to post a time in the session. "I think the clutch was slipping so I brought it in for the guys to look at. We tried to get it engaged to refire the engine, but it just didn't happen."

Watch Vasser and Gonzalez this Sunday, August 29th on Spike TV (4:00 pm ET/PT) or HDNet (1:30 pm ET, Live) as they compete on the beautiful 2.709-mile permanent road course on Isle de Notre Dame for Round 10 of the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered By Ford, the Molson Indy Montreal
