MONTERREY, Mexico (May 20, 2004) -- Rocketsports driver, Nelson Philippe returns to the city in the Sierras for Round Two of the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered By Ford. Philippe, who is currently in 13th position in the series standings with eight points, will take the No.17 LeasePlan Lola out for the 72 lap race on Sunday May 23, 2004.
In his debut season, at just 17 years old, Philippe is grabbing the attention of the motorsports world with his solid driving and competitive energy. "I can't wait to get back on the track," said Philippe, who made history in Round One of the season as the youngest driver to enter the Champ Car competition. "The Monterrey course is awesome with its big curbs, chicanes and fast corners."
Philippe approaches the Monterrey race with previous experience on the 2.104-mile permanent road course from his days in the Barber Dodge Pro Series. "I hope to put my experience on this circuit from my time in Barber Dodge to good use this weekend. We had positive results last season and I'm hoping for a good finish with the Champ Cars and the Rocketsports/LeasePlan team," said Philippe. "Knowing the track will enable me to concentrate on getting the best out of the car."
Philippe, who is fluent in Spanish having spent several years in Argentina, was impressed by the 215,000 fans that attended the 2003 race, and looks forward to the same reception this year. "So many fans come to the Monterrey race and they make it a special event for three full days. The people of Monterrey are enthusiastic about racing and proud of their city. It's a great venue and everyone has a good time!"
