McDONALD'S DRIVER BOURDAIS BEAT HIS '04 TRACK RECORD EN ROUTE TO POLE FOR THE TECATE/TELMEX MONTERREY GRAND PRIX; PACIFICARE DRIVER JUNQUEIRA ENCOUNTERED PROBLEMS BUT QUALIFIED FIFTH
Sebastien Bourdais, No. 1 McDonald's Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "I can't really describe the feeling I get when I drive here; it's like flying on a different planet. I have a great feeling about this track and this race. The McDonald's car was really good and hopefully we can repeat our result from last year. It's going to be a really difficult race with the heat. We are only running 10-15 laps in qualifying and we get out of the car and we are drenched. You will need to concentrate 110 percent for two hours in the race and that deploys tons of energy. We had strong balance in theMcDonald's car and I was able to put up a string of three good laps that were enough to take the pole. The Bridgestone tires have been great, we can't find much of a difference from set to set, so that helps you focus on the car. I am especially proud of the Newman/Haas team for having good cars here considering all of the extra work we have had to do to in order to compete in the Indy 500. Hopefully we can earn a strong result in the race tomorrow as a reward for the hard work."
Bruno Junqueira, No. 2 PacifiCare Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone: "The PacifiCare car was pretty good but we had a boost problem when we went out for our second run and cut our time short. On the first set of tires, I was already running a 1:14.0 lap but there was a cone in the middle of the last corner and I had to get off line to avoid and I lost a second-and-a-half. On the second run we had the boost problem and by the time we got back I only had time for one lap. I was slower on the first two-or-three corners but made up the time on the rest and moved up four spots. A fifth-place start is less than we were capable of, but I'm going to try as hard as I can to move the PacifiCare car up to the front."
ON THE SCHEDULE TOMORROW: The pre-race warm-up will take place from 10:45-11:15 a.m. CT while the race will begin at 2:45 p.m. and can be seen on a same-day, tape delayed basis on SPEED TV at 11 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday.
