MONTERREY, MEXICO - Team KOOL Green's Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy continued to battle a slippery track to qualify 7th and 15th respectively for tomorrow's inaugural Monterrey Grand Prix. Both TKG drivers set their fast times early in the session, with Franchitti clocking a time of 1:16.375 (99.174 mph) on his fifth lap, while Tracy's fastest lap - 1:16.909 (98.485 mph) - was set on his sixth lap of the new 2.1-mile road course at Fundidora Park. The track condition continues to challenge all of the Champ Car competitors, but Sweden's Kenny Brack toured the circuit in a time of 1:15.244 (100.665) to earn his first pole position in the CART FedEx Championship. Cristiano da Matta will line up on the outside of row one, having turned a best lap of 1:15.439 (100.404 mph).
Tomorrow's Champ Car activities get started at 11:00 a.m. with a 30-minute warm-up session. The first race of the 2001 season is scheduled to take the green flag for the 80-lap race at 3:00 p.m. (All times are Central Standard Time.)
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(15th with a lap-time of 1:16.909 seconds / 98.485 mph)
"I did my best time early in the session - on the sixth lap. We came in and made some changes to the KOOL car but it wasn't handling very well. I gave it everything I had trying to do better than I'd done on the first run, so I'm a little bit disappointed. I went two seconds faster than I did this morning, yet I was all over the track. We're just going to have to try to keep the KOOL car on the track during the race and keep going round and round and try to bring home some points. I'd rather be starting further up the grid, but I've won from further back than this."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN HONDA/REYNARD:
(7th with a lap-time of 1:16.375 seconds / 99.174 mph)
"The KOOL car maybe wasn't good enough for the pole, but it was better than what we were able to show today. Unfortunately, we just didn't get a clear lap. The car is better than yesterday, which is good. I'm optimistic about the race because we've got a good car on used tires. But It's going to be very difficult to pass and I don't know what we're going to do about that. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. You'll have to be very patient in making any moves in the race —you can't over-attack the course. This is going to be the kind of race that if there's any contact at all, CART is going to have to clamp down on it because some guys may think it's the only way you'll be able to pass."
