Coyne drivers continue points streak.
Monterrey, Mexico...Both Dale Coyne Racing drivers Alex Yoong and Joel Camathias finished in the points keeping the teams 2003 season string alive.
Alex Yoong, the 26 year old Malaysian ex-Formula 1 driver continued to impress by finishing a strong 9th after qualifying 17th in the Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey. While most cars were slower by a second in the race than their qualifying times, Alex continued to prove he has what it takes to be a top runner in CART by improving his time and posting a race best of 77.4, a second quicker than qualifying. "On his second set Alex was faster than the 2nd and 3rd place runners running consistent laps in the mid 77 second range," reported his race engineer John Bright.
"This is really a lot of fun," said the excited Yoong. "It is a good feeling to know in my first race and with no testing that I can race competitively with these guys." Alex came in on the pace lap when one of his seat belts came undone. That stop forced him to start in last position buy he continued to improve steadily throughout the race in his #11 Lola. On his final pit top he had a quick spin on pit entry but recovered quickly to retain his running position.
"Alex came here with no testing or experience in these cars," reflected team owner Dale Coyne. "I think Alex has shown the world that there is a lot more to come from this talented Asian and I hope we can put the pieces in place to go forward for the rest of the season."
Joel Camathias driving his Lola/Ford/Bridgestone #19 scored 2 more points in his second race in Champ Car. Joel started 19th and moved up to run in the top 14 for most of the race. He ran strong in the mid section and end to post an eleventh place finish.
"I did a better time in the race than qualifying, so I am happy with the progress," reported the 22 year old Swiss driver. "The team did a good job giving me cars that finish in every race."
Joel is scheduled to do his first oval test in 1-week at Homestead, Florida. Alex Yoong and Dale Coyne are working to put a program together for the rest of the season and have scheduled a road course test in Arizona just prior to Long Beach.
