MONTERREY, Mexico - Coyne Racing-Team P.R.G. drivers Michael Krumm and Luiz Garcia Jr. had their day end with engine problems during Sunday's Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey, the first race of the FedEx CART Championship Series.
Garcia went out of the race on the 36th lap (classified 26th) and Krumm the 51st (classified 23rd), but both had the potential to score points. Krumm, who was competing in his first CART race, drove the No. 19 Infineon-Chapeco-Dark Dog-Glashutte Lola-Ford/Cosworth, as high as 11th, while Garcia, who drives the No. 21 Embratel-Chapeco-Dark Dog-Infineon Lola-Ford/Cosworth, ran as high as 20th.
"We were definitely on our way to a good finish, but unfortunately I had a couple of things go wrong. On the first pit stop we had a problem with the fuel probe and needed to come in on the next lap to get more fuel which put us a lap down, and then the engine started losing power. I was running good laps times and believed I could have scored some points." - Luiz Garcia Jr., Driver #21 Embratel-Chapeco-Dark Dog-Infineon Lola-Ford/Cosworth
"It would have been nice to finish strong in my first race, but unfortunately it was not to be. We changed the set up between morning practice and the race and at first it was a little tough to adjust to, but after we put on the second set of tires, the car was fantastic. I'm not sure what happened to the car, but I think it was the engine." - Michael Krumm, Driver #19 Infineon-Chapeco-Dark Dog-Glashutte Lola-Ford/Cosworth
On his first Champ Car Start
"It was very hot and I admit tough, but after the second pit stop I felt great and really thought I was going to a good finish. I kept up with the race pace and I was confident I was going to pass quit a few people.
"I think both Michael and Luiz did a great job and we felt confident that we were going to have a points-paying finish. Michael has proved he has the talent and for him and Luiz to get in a Lola for the first time this weekend and run well is a testament to their talent. We had a good strategy for Michael and it's a shame he went out. - Dale Coyne, Owner
"All in all we had a good weekend as both drivers drove respectably all weekend. Unfortunately, Luiz went out early and it's a shame as he was running in the top twenty, while Michael was as high as eleventh. It seems both had the same problem with the engines." - Andreas Leberle, Team P.R.G. Managing Director
