SATURDAY'S BRIDGESTONE POLE QUALIFYING SHOW TO BEGIN SPEED CHANNEL COVERAGE OF CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES EVENT IN MONTERREY, MEXICO
INDIANAPOLIS (May 18, 2005) -- The Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford picks up the pace on the 2005 season with Sunday's Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix Presented by Roshfrans, but SPEED Channel viewers will get an early glimpse of the action with Saturday's Bridgestone Pole Qualifying Show.
The Bridgestone Pole Qualifying Show will accompany SPEED Channel's coverage of eight of this season's Champ Car events, and will provide viewers with highlights from both Friday and Saturday qualifying sessions along with interviews and coverage of the $10,000 Bridgestone Pole Award presentation. Bridgestone developed a new pole award for Champ Car competition in 2005, awarding $10,000 ($5,000 for the driver and $5,000 to charity) for each of the 14 race poles with a $30,000 award given at the end of the season to the driver and $10,000 to the driver's chief mechanic with the most pole positions during the season.
"Sponsoring the Champ Car Bridgestone Pole Qualifying Show is a natural extension for us as sponsors this year of the Bridgestone Pole Award," said Al Speyer, Executive Director of Bridgestone Motorsport. "Qualifying is the most exciting segment of a race weekend next to the race itself, and we're pleased that the qualifying show will bring that action into the homes of SPEED Channel viewers and serve as an excellent preview to the SPEED Channel race broadcasts themselves."
In seven of the eight Champ Car races on SPEED Channel, the 30-minute qualifying show will air directly before Sunday's Champ Car race coverage, with the exception being this weekend's broadcast of qualifying in Monterrey, Mexico, which will be shown Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time
"SPEED Channel has been looking forward to Champ Car's return to the network since the deal was announced," said Rick Miner, SPEED Channel SVP Programming/Production and Executive Producer. "Opening with a qualifying special from the Monterrey Grand Prix this weekend, SPEED will deliver eight races, including 30-minute qualifying shows, to some of the most passionate fans in motor sports."
The Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford returns to action this weekend at the 2.104-mile Fundidora Park layout in Monterrey. SPEED Channel will air Sunday's race on a same-day tape-delayed basis beginning at 11 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday evening. In addition, fans can follow all the action during qualifying and race day via the Race Director subscription service available on the series' official website www.champcar.ws.
