Team Rahal searches for more speed. Vasser puts the Shell car ninth on the provisional grid.

MONTEREY, CA . . . Shell Champ Car driver Jimmy Vasser claimed ninth on the provisional grid for Sunday's Shell 300, the feature event in the 2002 Bridgestone Grand Prix on Monterey. Vasser posted a fast lap of 113.604 mph on his 12th timed lap which came during his second run. Due to track congestion Vasser was unable to top his fast lap in his last three timed laps.

Under the 2002 CART road course qualifying rules competitors are limited to 15 timed laps per qualifying session.

Michel Jourdain Jr. , the CART points leader, was unable to find the balance in his car during the practice or qualifying session. Jourdain holds the 16th spot on the provisional grid.

The Shell 300 is scheduled for Sunday at 4:30 PM EDT on Speed Channel. Qualifying will resume on Saturday afternoon for Sunday's race.

Jimmy Vasser (#8 Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - "We are having a little trouble coming to grips with the chassis right now. I've driven this place enough over the years to know that you want to start at the front of the field. So we will be working hard all night to gain more time in Saturday's qualifying. The track should get better on Saturday with more rubber on the asphalt. We have to get a few things better and I think our times will jump up the charts. Our testing with Team Rahal has been very good on road courses, so I am a little surprised that we are off pace right now. This team is good and has a great track record here so I am confident we will improve for Saturday."

Michel Jourdain Jr. (#9 Gigante Ford-Cosworth/Lola on Bridgestone tires) - We are not where we want to be right now. I think I had a really good lap going in qualifying but we had a little electrical problem and lost that lap. I could have been in the top-seven or eight without that problem. This place is such a great circuit. It is a classic road course. I just want to improve the car so we can run well here. I have always liked coming to Monterey and Laguna Seca. A good qualifying finish will make this trip even better, but we have a lot of work to do if we want to get to the front."
