Kanaan tops Honda qualifiers at Laguna Seca.
Tony Kanaan again led the Honda field in final qualifying for the Bridgestone Grand Prix of Monterey and will start fourth in tomorrow's 90-lap race at Laguna Seca Raceway. The Mo Nunn Racing driver actually bettered his time from yesterday's first qualifying round, but fell just four-tenths of a second short of the time set by pole qualifier Cristiano da Matta.
Owner/driver Adrian Fernandez slightly improved his time today, but still dropped back three places to 13th, followed by the Team KOOL Green duo of Dario Franchitti and Paul Tracy. Shinji Nakano in the second Fernandez Racing entry moved up one position to 18th on the final grid, but Michael Andretti continued to struggle with traction problems aboard his Team Motorola Honda and fell back to 19th on the grid.
Tomorrow's fifth round in the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series will start at 4:30 p.m. EDT, with live television coverage on the Speed Channel cable/satellite network.
Tony Kanaan (#10 Pioneer/Worldcom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda) Qualifying 4th: "If somebody would have told me this weekend that we were going to start fourth, you would have seen me doing cartwheels. But after the first qualifying session Friday, it's a little disappointing that we didn't move up in the order. I'm not complaining, because it's been great this weekend that we've been consistently fast since the very first laps of practice. My guys have all been working so hard and so closely, and it's nice to see we're getting some good results. After we went out of the race early at Milwaukee, we had a little meeting and told each other that we were going to work really hard and make something good happen at Laguna. Well, it's shaping up that way."
