Fittipaldi, Toyota Turn Fastest Qualifying Lap, But Lose Provisional Pole
Christian Fittipaldi (Newman/Haas Toyota) turned the fastest lap of today's provisional CART qualifying, but lost the pole to a new CART "red flag" regulation. Fittipaldi had the fastest lap of the session taken away due to the new CART regulation that calls for any driver that causes a "red flag" during a qualifying session to lose their fastest lap. In this case, Fittipaldi's lap, which was more than a tenth faster than the next highest competitor, lost what would have been the pole lap after an incident that saw him spin and make light contact with the wall early in the session. Consequently, his second-fastest lap was good enough to place him fourth on the provisional grid and the highest qualifying Toyota.
Cristiano da Matta, who was the fastest in the morning practice, placed one spot behind his Newman/Haas Racing teammate in fifth.
Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Bruno Junqueira and Kenny Brack placed seventh and eighth, respectively. This weekend's race marks the first for Brack in the Target colors.
Rookie Townsend Bell made it five Toyota-powered entries in the top-10 with a 10th in his first-ever Champ Car road course qualifying attempt. The 2001 Indy Lights champion won eight pole positions on his way to last year's Lights title.
The pole position for Sunday's main event will be decided in final CART qualifying, Saturday from 1:45-2:45 p.m.
