Final Qualifying a No Go as Rain Ruins the Day for Sigma and CART Teams

MONTERREY, Mexico - A light and steady rain turned into a windy, heavy rainstorm that prevented any chance for Sigma Autosport driver Max Papis from improving on his time from Friday, during final qualifying for the Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix today.

In fact, the rain wrecked qualifying for all CART FedEx competitors as only a handful of drivers took turns out on the 2.104-mile circuit. The qualifying session was red-flagged during a 20-minute interval as water accumulated in certain areas of the track. Papis was unable to get in a single lap during the qualifying.

As a result, Papis, 32, of Como, Italy, but who now resides in Miami, Fla., will start the race on the inside of Row 10, with yesterday's time of 81.992 seconds (92.380 mph).

It will be Papis' 100th career start in the CART FedEx Championship Series.

The rain could not have come at a worse time as Papis found some speed that he was looking for during the Saturday morning practice session. Papis' best time during the practice was 77.451 seconds (97.796 mph), more than four seconds quicker than Friday's performance.

The Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix begins at 3 p.m. Central Time. The race will be televised live on SPEED Channel.

Quotes

"Qualifying was pretty frustrating because we made a lot of improvements since Friday. This morning we were consistently running in the top ten and making more strides. We were one day too late, but next time we'll be more prepared and work even harder."

On his 100th career Champ Car Start

"I'm very happy to be starting my 100th CART race on Sunday. This is an honor, as I believe the CART FedEx Championship Series is one of the world's finest racing organizations. I'm sure I will have a great race."
