Papis Brings Home a 9th Place Finish in First Race for Sigma Autosport

MONTERREY, Mexico - Sigma Autosport driver Max Papis nearly made his 100th career Champ Car start a memorable one as he ran through a gauntlet of a first-lap incident and charged his way from his starting position of 18th to finish 9th at the CART FedEx Championship Series season opener today.

Papis ran in the top five for much of the race and led everyone across the finish line on Lap 51. Papis' first two pit stops were flawless, however his final one took a bit longer than normal and dropped him a few positions.

Still, Papis collected four points towards the CART FedEx Championship point standings. It was also Papis' 39th career top-10 finish.

All told, Papis made three pit stops (Laps 26, 52 & 77). All were routine (fuel & tires) and the last stop was made under the yellow caution flag.

Prior to the race, Papis was presented with two posters full of well wishes made by Indiana school children. One poster was made by 3rd graders from William Penn Elementary School of Indianapolis. The other was also created by 3rd graders, this time from West Grove Elementary School of Greenwood, Ind.

"I thought we tried very, very hard today and our goal before the race was to be in the top five. We were running there (in the top five) for most of the race. I felt the car was pretty competitive and it felt good during the race. Maybe next time we'll be a little better prepared and start the race closer to the front, but today was a good beginning by scoring some points."
- Max Papis, Sigma Autosport Driver

"The race was pretty good, but it could have been better for us. We were a little bit slow on the last (pit) stop, but we'll take ninth place. It's better than were we started."
- Phil Howard, Sigma Autosport Team Manager
