Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey
Friday, March 08, 2002
Recap: Friday qualifying at road course races officially returned to CART FedEx competition today. All racecars took to the track with a maximum of 15 timed laps. Oriol Servia completed 12 laps and qualified 11th, while teammate Scott Dixon completed 15 laps and qualified 14th. Both drivers are optimistic heading into second round qualifying tomorrow.
Oriol Servia - #17 PWR TOYOTA
Position: 11th Time: 1:19:878s Laps: 12 Speed: 94.825mph
"I'm not extremely happy, but looking at the crash I had this morning things didn't turn out so bad," said Servia "The team worked incredibly hard to put the car together in time for qualifying. Considering we didn't have much time to look at the set-up of the car, I think we did a very decent job. Obviously we wanted to be a lot further up, but the tools are there and we have another qualifying session to go. The track was very slippery, but it should be better for qualifying tomorrow. It was actually a lot better every time we went back out, so by Sunday the track should be in very good condition."
Scott Dixon - #7 PWR TOYOTA
Position: 14th Time: 1:20:102s Laps: 15 Speed: 94.559mph
"I think we probably went out a little too early and didn't have enough tires towards the end," said Dixon. "I had a few pretty good laps going, but I kept locking the fronts. Qualifying is all about timing now and I just think our timing was a little off. We'll talk more about our timing strategy tonight and hopefully do much better during tomorrow's qualifying session."
