Fernandez & Franchitti are Fast on Friday

Local favorite Adrian Fernandez thrilled thousands of Mexican fans - and his team sponsors - by leading the way in first-round qualifying today for Sunday's Tecate-Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey. It was the best qualifying performance to-date for the native Mexican since he founded his own team at the start of the 2001 season.

Under CART's new qualifying rules for 2002, which returned the series to qualifying on both Friday and Saturday it also guarantees Fernandez at least a front row start and a championship point regardless of the results of tomorrow's final qualifying. Dario Franchitti then made it an all-Honda front row today, posting the second-fastest qualifying time in his Team KOOL Green entry.

Both Tony Kanaan and Shinji Nakano were ranked among the top ten mid-way through the session, but dropped back down the order in the final, frantic minutes of qualifying. Michael Andretti struggled with oversteer in his Team Motorola entry to finish 17th while Paul Tracy missed most of the session when a broken transmission halted his run, leaving the Canadian a disappointed 20th overall. Final qualifying takes place tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. EST, with same-day television coverage starting on Speed Channel at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Adrian Fernandez (#51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Fernandez Racing Honda) provisional pole qualifier: "This was a great day for the whole team, especially as we struggled here last year. But today the car was very well balanced and we managed to find a gap out there with no traffic, which was remarkable with all the cars out there, then managed to take advantage of the opportunity we had."
