Fernández Captures Provisional Pole at Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix

Adrián Fernández, Owner/Driver -- #51 Tecate/Quaker State/Telmex Honda/Lola/Bridgestone:

"It's an incredible feeling! To achieve this here in Mexico is just fantastic. The team has put so much effort into this year, and Don Halliday and the whole team deserve all the credit. They worked really hard last night, and coming up with the pole today was just a dream come true for everyone. It's one thing to achieve this dream driving for somebody else, but doing it with your own team is just something very, very special. The beginning of qualifying didn't go as we planned, but at the end we managed to get the pole. I like the new qualifying system. It gives you a lot more opportunity. I am also wearing eyeglasses now, and I really believe the glasses made a difference."

"This is the home base for my sponsor Tecate and both Quaker State and Telmex, who are based in Mexico City, also have a lot of guests here this weekend. Starting on the front row is the best reward for their support. My mother, my sister and my two nephews are here, and I'm sure they brought some good luck. Monterrey is like a home to me because I have spent so much time here over the years. This is very special."

FAST FACTS: Only owner/driver in current Champ Car field....Ranked fourth among active CART drivers in career wins with seven....will be making his 146th career Champ Car start....tied for 13th in CART career starts....started and finished 19th at Monterrey last year in team's debut....has finished 24 of 42 Champ Car career road course starts in the top 10 (57%)....Fernández and Nakano are currently the only drivers running the Honda/Lola/Bridgestone combination.

Shinji Nakano, #52 Alpine/Mitsuba Honda/Lola/Bridgestone:

"It was a good day for us with Adrian's pole position. It was a great result for the team and I am very happy. Basically I think I had a good car today. I'm a little bit disappointed in what I did, but I have confidence for tomorrow. The motivation for the team is really high now here in Mexico and that's great. We have to continue this to Motegi. It's a good start, and I'm very happy."

FAST FACTS: Will be making his 38th career Champ Car start....enters his third season of Champ Car competition, and second year with Fernández Racing.... Started 27th and finished 18th at Monterrey last year in team's debut....has 11 Champ Car career road course starts to his credit.... best road course finish was 11th at Portland in 2000.

Tom Anderson, Co-Owner/Managing Director:

"Today was a great start to the new season and the new CART. All of us at Fernandez Racing are in agreement with the new rule changes. We understand that the new rules may not be perfect, however the rules are equal for everyone at every event. The crew has worked very hard to make our new package of Lola, Honda and Bridgestone reliable so that we are able to maximize our track time during practice and qualifying. I certainly hope our fans and new TV partners at the Speed Channel felt the thrill that all of us in CART experienced during our first qualifying session of the season. Excitement and pressure were extreme, emotion ruled and strategy became apparent in that we all have a lot to learn about the new CART in order to take full advantage of the new rules package. Under the current rules, Adrian will start the race on the front row for his efforts today. I want to personally thank all of the Franchise Board for allowing Chris Pook and his new regime to take control. I can hardly wait for tomorrow's qualifying."
