Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard finished the day seventh fastest in practice for Sunday’s Miller Lite 225. Kanaan recorded a best time of 21.660 seconds (an average of 171.534 mph) over the 1-mile oval here in this afternoon’s second practice session of the day. He moved up one spot in the order from this morning’s session, when he had a best time of 21.738 seconds (170.908 mph). Gil de Ferran had the fastest time in this afternoon’s session at 21.389 seconds (173.697 mph), a time that was bettered by five cars this morning, including pacesetter Juan Montoya’s 21.602 (171.984 mph).

Qualifying is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. EDT) and will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis by ESPN2 at 5:30 p.m. EDT. Race time is 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. EDT) Sunday, and it will be aired live by ABC-TV.

“We have a very consistent car, if not the fastest car, right now. We pulled the car off the truck this morning and ran a 21.7 right off the bat, and we’re pretty much in the same neighborhood this afternoon. The trick will be to find that final little bit that will put us at the top. We didn’t test here (two weeks ago), and everyone else did, so I was maybe a little nervous about how we were going to do. But, all things considered, we have to be pleased that we’re in the ballpark. Consistency will be a good thing for the race, though. I’m very happy with the progress we’ve been making with the Mercedes engine. We’re working hard, and they’re working hard, and we both know there is still a long way to go. But every race they come up with some new things that seem to make a difference. Here, power isn’t an issue as much as a motor that is smooth as you go on and off the throttle. We’re on our way, and tomorrow’s another day to move up the ladder.”
