Rocketsports Evening Practice at the Milwaukee Mile
Rocketsports drivers, Alex Tagliani and Nelson Philippe completed a day of practice at the Milwaukee Mile. The cool evening practice sessions precede Friday's qualifying round for the Time Warner Cable Roadrunner 250, set for 8:00 p.m. Saturday night (June 5, 2004).
While practice times were 'off' from what the Rocketsports pilots posted during recent tests at the Mile, the track time proved valuable for the two-car team to develop the set-up of the pair of Lolas for qualifying and Saturday's race.
In the No. 8 Johnson Controls Lola, Tagliani was 14th quickest of the day with a fast lap of 21.921 (169.481 mph or 272.753 km/h). Tagliani dealt with handling issues and worked with the Johnson Controls team to sort them for Friday's qualifying.
Nelson Philippe in the No. 17 LeasePlan Lola, was 16th in the line-up with a time of 22.150. As the rookie reached speeds of 167.729 mph or 269.933 km/h, he reflected on the experience saying, "I'm building my knowledge-base on ovals, and experience is the key to doing this, so I value the exposure from the long practice sessions. The night time conditions have a noticeable effect on the track, so the late practice is necessary and advantageous.
"The performance of the car and accuracy in the set-up may play a more important part on an oval, where too much push can send you into the wall!" When asked what he expects of the car and himself for Friday's qualifying session, Philippe responded, "a good set-up, proper handling and careful passing."
Tagliani and Philippe will continue to run practice laps on the 1.033 mile-Milwuakee oval on Friday, June 04, 2004 from 4:15 -- 6:00 p.m. (EST) and end the day with the only qualifying session set for 8:30 -- 10:00 p.m. (EST)
