Notes from Cart concerning the cancellation of Friday afternoon activities
Due to the structural damage to the Turn 2 wall caused by this morning's accident involving CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI, CART, its drivers and The Milwaukee Mile officials have made the decision to curtail all racing activities for the remainder of Friday. Repairs to the Turn 2 wall will be made overnight with all scheduled activities on Saturday to run normally. The Milwaukee Mile officials have allowed the fans to come into the pit area to get autographs and have pictures made with their favorite drivers. In addition, patrons of The Milwaukee Mile who have a Friday ticket stub will be admitted FREE on Saturday, May 30, for CART practice and qualifying and the Toyota Atlantic race.
ANDREW CRAIG, CART Chairman and Chief Executive Officer: "Our officials, working closely with the track, did what they could to make repairs as quickly as possible. When we went out with Al [Unser Jr.] and the members of the driver safety committee [Gil de Ferran, Greg Moore and Bryan Herta], we were in agreement that this was the proper course of action. We very much welcome the input of our drivers. We absolutely concur with them. They're the guys who are out there; it's their lives who are on the line. I'd like to thank Al for the cooperative way they've approached this."
7 AL UNSER JR., President of the Championship Drivers Association and member of the driver safety committee: "The chances are pretty slim that any driver would hit that wall in the same place, but it was decided to take the time and do it [the repairs] right so that we can have a great, safe race this weekend."
