PKV Racing Pilots Prepared To Duel At Dusk On Legendary Milwaukee Oval

INDIANAPOLIS (June 01, 2004) -- Following a five-day swing that included a demanding travel schedule between permanent road courses at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Road America, PKV Racing with drivers Jimmy Vasser (#12 Gulfstream Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) and Roberto Gonzalez (#21 NII Holdings, Inc. Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone) concluded testing today at Elkhart Lake in the rolling hills of the Wisconsin countryside. The team is scheduled to arrive in Milwaukee this evening after a quick intrastate haul in preparation for Saturday night's Time Warner Cable Road Runner 250 under the lights at the famed Mile oval.

Vasser, the 1998 Milwaukee Champion, is no stranger to 1.032-mile bullring, having notched three top fives and seven top 10s in 11 career appearances. The 1996 Champ Car World Series titlewinner knows that teams will be on their game this weekend in the Badger State.

"I always look forward to returning to the Milwaukee Mile," said Vasser. "It's been a good track for me in terms of success and it's just an awesome place. We had a lot of teams testing here earlier this season; I think every team was represented, so you know everybody is taking it very seriously. Being that it's the only oval this year and we're running under the lights here again, everyone is going to be up for this race for sure."

Vasser's rookie counterpart Gonzalez will be making his first start on an oval and will be looking to build off momentum gained after a strong showing of ninth in his native Monterrey, Mexico in Round 2 last month.

"I'm very excited to go to the Milwaukee Mile, especially after getting a great top-10 result in Monterrey in front of our sponsor, Nextel Mexico," said Gonzalez. "The team is improving and the car is getting better each race. I feel momentum building and hopefully we can have a strong showing after the testing we had in Milwaukee last month. I know how cold it was at night there last year, so temperatures and cold tires might be a concern if history repeats itself. It would make things a bit difficult from a driver's perspective, but I'm optimistic and we're prepared to do well."

Watch Vasser and Gonzalez take on Milwaukee's famous oval with the rest of the Champ Car competition in the 250-lap Time Warner Cable Road Runner 250 this Saturday, June 5th on HDNet (Live, 9:00 ET) or Sunday, June 6th on Spike TV (4:00 pm ET/PT, tape delayed).

NOTABLE NUGGETS

* Former Milwaukee Champ--Of Jimmy Vasser's 10 career Champ Car wins, Milwaukee delivered the open wheel star his seventh "W" in 1998.

* Gonzalez In The Mix For 2004 CCWS ROTY--With a career-best finish of ninth last month in Monterrey, Gonzalez finds himself second only to former Formula 1 pilot Justin Wilson in the race for Rookie-of-the-Year honors. Gonzalez trails Wilson 40-20 in the running for the award that includes five first-year pilots this season.

* 207 and counting--Jimmy Vasser is scheduled to start his 207th (sixth all-time) race on Saturday in Milwaukee, which leaves him just one start behind Champ Car great Mario Andretti (208) who ranks fifth on the Career Starts list (1979- Present). Known for being one of the most durable drivers in the paddock, Vasser is also riding a streak of 185 consecutive starts, second longest in series history only to Al Unser Jr. (192).
