CHAMPCAR/CART: Milwaukee: Patrick Carpentier's wrist and practice results are fine

West Allis, Wisconsin, June 2, 2000 Team Player's driver Patrick Carpentier had positive results on two fronts at today's practice session on The Milwaukee Mile oval in preparation for the sixth race of the FedEx CART Championship on Sunday. Carpentier put in a strong practice run, finishing with the ninth-fastest time, and reported that the left wrist that he broke two months ago successfully withstood the rigors of 106 laps.

Carpentier's fast lap of 21.650 seconds (171.603 miles per hour) was less than three-tenths of a second behind Brazilian Gil de Ferran.

"I'm extremely happy with the way everything went today," remarked Carpentier, who set a track record here two years ago with the fastest qualifying time. "It's only Friday and already we put in over 100 laps, which is just about half of a full-distance race. As soon as the Player's crew put the car on the track today, it ran well. Every time we put on a new set of tires we were right up there with the top times.

"I'm glad to be back in a regular race-weekend sequence, after not having practice or qualifying before the race in Nazareth last weekend. I wanted to do a lot of laps today so I could see how my wrist held up, and there was no pain at all. It was just fine. Based on how everything went today, I'm looking for the top 5 in qualifying."

Team Player's rookie Alex Tagliani, who encountered some problems with the car's balance and handling in bumpy sections of the track, clocked the 19th fastest time. He took the problems that arose during the practice session in stride, vowing that he will be "running strong in practice tomorrow morning."

Commenting on today's session, Tagliani added: "The car was understeering going into the corners and oversteering coming out of them. In the bumpy parts of the track, the car would sometimes shift sideways. The Player's crew tried to soften the springs but it caused other problems. They will sit down tonight with Pat's team and work things out."

Some of the action on the track during today's practice run was captured by a film crew for the movie "Champs" which Sylvester Stallone is currently making.

The Team Player's drivers will be back on the track Saturday for the event's lone qualifying session.

Racing fans can watch the Miller Lite 225 live on The Sports Network at 4 p.m. (ET) on Sunday.
