ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford - Finished 7th/Under Protest for 5th - IT LOOKED LIKE YOU WERE PASSED BY A FEW CARS UNDER THAT LAST CAUTION . . . "I should be classified in fifth place not seventh. Carpentier and Montoya very clearly passed me under the yellow." ASIDE FROM THAT YOU SEEMED TO HAVE A CAR NOT QUITE GOOD ENOUGH TO PASS WITH BUT GOOD ENOUGH TO HOLD OFF THE COMPETITION . . "It was a long day. The car was not great but it was not that bad. I just couldn't attack the guys I wanted to. We had some very good stops. We should have been more competitive today." THIS MARKS THE LAST RACE FOR YOUR '97 REYNARD AS YOU WILL TAKE DELIVERY OF YOUR '99 REYNARD FOR PORTLAND . . . "I am really looking forward to the 1999 car. It should have a little more downforce and it should help us out. Given the kind of car we had today, I am really happy with where we finished."
P.J. JONES -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - Finished 20th - "The car was just bad everywhere. Something was not right with the car. It did not feel like it was the same car I drove in practice this morning. There was something wrong with the right rear of the car. The car was moving around real bad at the start and when I tried to pass some cars on the start I just got sideways and spun." YOU GUYS WERE WORKING ON THE CAR ALL DAY. WHAT WERE YOU WORKING ON IN PARTICULAR? "We were trying to get a little more push in the car but I think we could have put all the push in the world in it and it still would not have solved the problem."
MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- K Mart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - Finsihed 15th - YOU HAD A VERY STRONG CAR TODAY, BUT OBVIOUSLY THE PIT ROAD INCIDENT WITH YOUR VENT MAN TY MANSEAU IS WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND . . . "Yes it is. I have never done that before. I've never hit anybody in the pits before. I feel terrible." CAN YOU ELABORATE ON WHAT HAPPENED? AFTER THEY DROPPED YOU FROM THE JACKS THE CAR SEEMED TO BEGIN TO CREEP FORWARD? "The car was creeping and then I thought they said to go and that's when I caught (Manseau)." BEFORE THAT INCIDENT IN THE PITS, YOUR CAR WAS THE CLASS OF THE FIELD. YOU SEEMED ABLE TO HANDLE ANYONE ON THE TRACK. . . "The car was a winner today. The car was really hooked up. Even in the end when I was missing some of my bodywork I was still running quicker than most of the other guys. It's disappointing."
CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big K Ford-Cosworth - Finished 8th - YOU WERE VERY STRONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE RACE BUT AFTER THE FIRST STOP THE CAR DID NOT SEEM TO BE AS STOUT. WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM? "The car was very good during the first stint. Then we lost power and did not know what it was. We couldn't figure it out but it didn't get any worse so we think it was a boost problem. Although it was hard to hold onto my position Michael (Andretti) helped me out for a while. The race developed mostly under the green and it did not help us out with our strategy. That forced us to pit dropping us a few positions. Also, during the last couple of laps my tires really went away and that almost caused me to spin. The day started off with a lot more promise than it ended with."
MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - Finished 13th - YOU HAD YOUR HANDFUL ALL DAY. THEY PAVED THIS TRACK YEARS AGO, BUT WATCHING YOU SLIDE THROUGH THE CORNERS WAS REMINISCENT OF THE DIRT TRACK DAYS AT MILWAUKEE . . . "The setup was really off especially during the beginning of the race. We had a huge oversteer especially in the turn into the corners. It was a real handful all day. I am very proud of my team. They did a great job of helping me stay competitive. This was a day that we had to just make the best of the hand that we were dealt. This race showed a lot of character by the Miller Lite guys. That's what we have to take out of today."
BRYAN HERTA -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - Finished 25th/Handling -"Our car was way loose in the race. We changed springs and adjusted tire pressure but by that time we were down a few laps. After making those changes the car developed a loose condition. I want to apologize to my guys, Shell, Ford and Firestone. Everyone on this team has worked so hard and I didn't get it done this weekend. I couldn't figure out how to make the car go fast. I want to say that I plan on making it all up to everyone in two weeks in Portland. We will be strong there."
MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR -19- Herdez Viva Mexico Ford-Cosworth - Finished 16th - "The car in traffic was very loose. Only when I was by myself was the car okay. We took out some air pressure and made a wing change and it helped a bit. Other than that the team worked very well this weekend. We have to get better in qualifying. We really need to work on starting the race further up front."
