Milestones
Brooklyn, MI (July 22, 1998) -- Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) makes his 100th FedEx Championship Series career start this weekend. He made his first Champ Car start at Australia in 1992, qualifying 17th and finishing 15th. Vasser, the 1996 PPG Cup champion, has earned seven victories and six pole positions since then, including two each this season. He has scored PPG Cup points in 48 of his last 55 starts, and has finished eighth or better in 15 of the last 16 FedEx Championship Series events.
Also reaching milestones at this weekend's U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota are Scott Pruett (Visteon Reynard Ford) and Bobby Rahal (Miller Lite Reynard Ford). Pruett will make the 118th start of a career which began at Long Beach in 1988, and will move into sole possession of 13th place on the CART career list, breaking a tie with Kevin Cogan and Hiro Matsushita, both at 117 career starts. By starting the remaining eight events of the season, Pruett would move into 12th place overall, passing Roberto Guerrero (120).
Rahal's start at Michigan will be his 90th consecutive CART start, tying him with Geoff Brabham for seventh place in FedEx Championship Series annals. Rahal's current streak began at Milwaukee in '93. He is the only driver with two streaks in the top 10, also holding down fourth place with 145 consecutive starts in a streak which began at Long Beach in 1984 and ended at Indianapolis in 1993. Rahal is CART's all-time leader with 256 career starts.
