CHAMPCAR/CART: Mid Ohio Saturday Practice Report

Lexington, OH (August 8, 1998) - Bryan Herta, who earned the provisional pole Friday for Sunday's Miller Lite 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, continued his dominance Saturday by posting the fastest speed of the morning practice session.

Lexington, OH (August 8, 1998) - Bryan Herta, who earned the provisional pole Friday for Sunday's Miller Lite 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, continued his dominance Saturday by posting the fastest speed of the morning practice session.

Herta (Shell Reynard Ford) averaged 123.407 miles per hour (1 minute, 5.870 seconds) on his fastest circuit of the 2.258-mile, 13-turn permanent road course. He earned the provisional pole Friday at 122.907 mph, but did not set a track record Saturday morning since all track standards must be established in either qualifying or race conditions.

Mark Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes) was second at 122.875 miles per hour (1:06.155) followed by Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) at 122.708 mph (1:06.245). Two-time defending race champion Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) bounced back from Friday's engine difficulties which caused him to qualify 21st to post the fourth-fastest practice speed Saturday at 122.671 mph (1:06.265).

Greg Moore (Player's/Indeck Reynard Mercedes) rounded out the top five at 122.634 mph (1:06.285).
