Lilly driver Bourdais sixth fastest after red eliminated third fastest time in provisional qualifying; Pacificare driver Junqueira 11TH

OVERALL:

Jimmy Vasser spun on course and brought out a red flag as well as the checkered flag to end the provisional qualifying session with a few minutes remaining. Bourdais was entering the final corner to complete one of his remaining timed laps when the red flag was shown and thus eliminated his lap time that would have put him third on the grid.

BRUNO JUNQUEIRA, #1 PacifiCare Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone:

"I think we had a top-three car but we couldn't get a clear lap (in qualifying). On my first run we went out early and did two laps to get the temperature in the tries. On my first timed lap someone came out of the pits in front of me and that happened each time. During my second stint, I was on my first hot lap and the red flag came out. It was a difficult session. Since this morning the car has been a top-three car and we worked to make improvements for qualifying but unfortunately we didn't get to see the potential. Hopefully the weather will be the same tomorrow and we can try to put the PacifiCare car in the front of the grid."

NOTES:

It will be his third race here... Started sixth and finished fourth in 2002. Started 10th and finished 13th in rookie season in 2001. If Junqueira wins the pole tomorrow in final qualifying, it will be his SEVENTH pole in his 52nd CART event at the Champ Car GP of Mid-Ohio...If he wins the pole tomorrow it would be his second with NHR and FIFTH on a ROAD/STREET COURSE ('02 poles in Elkhart Lake, Denver, Mexico City, '03 - Elkhart Lake & TOMORROW)...He has finished in the top-five in all 10 road/street course races so far this season including EIGHT podiums...It was his SEVENTH bonus point this season (Friday/Monterey, Friday/ Toronto, Friday/Vancouver, Friday, Saturday & Sunday/Elkhart Lake, TODAY)...If he earns the pole it would be the 13TH in the past 28 CART events for the team...He currently leads the point standings with 164 and is two ahead of second place Tracy who has 162.

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, #2 Lilly Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone:

"The timing of the red flag didn't help us today. I was in the final corner before the front straight when the red came out and I took it easy through the area. Even after backing off, the lap time would have put us in third place but it was disallowed. It was a difficult session as there was a lot of traffic and it was very hard to put a complete lap together. If the weather stays as forecasted we should be able to try again for a better start in dry conditions tomorrow."

NOTES:

Will be his first race here...He earned four poles (3-road course; 1-oval) and three wins in 12 events so far. (He started in second place in England and fifth in Long Beach.) Has won a total of six bonus points this season (Friday & Saturday in St. Pete; Saturday in Monterrey, Saturday and Sunday in Germany; Friday in Cleveland)...He is currently ranked 4th in the point standings with 116 points.

TEAM NOTES:

In total the team has won THREE races (Mi. Andretti 1990-1991, Ma. Andretti 1984), SIX poles (Mansell 1993, Mi. Andretti 1990-1992, Ma. Andretti 1986, 1984) and 11 podiums here (2nd Fittipaldi 2002, Tracy 1995, Ma. Andretti 1990, 1988, 1983; 3rd Fittipaldi 2000, Mi. Andretti 1996, 1989). At the mid-season test here Junqueira ran the fastest lap on Day 1 and was fastest in the heat of the day for Day 2. Bourdais ran in the top-five. LAST YEAR IN MID-OHIO: NHR's Fittipaldi started second, led two laps and finished second to polesitter Patrick Carpentier. Da Matta drove off-course while attempting to pass Carpentier for the lead from second place and ultimately finished 13th after setting the fastest race lap.
