Lexington, Oh (August 7, 1998) - Local favorite Bryan Herta, who lives just a few miles from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in New Albany, clocked in with the fastest time during Friday morning's opening round of practice for the Miller Lite 200 - Round 13 in the 1998 FedEx Championship Series - on the Mid-Ohio road course.
Herta, who has qualified on the pole five times in 67 starts, clocked in at 1:07.081 (121.179 mph) on the 2.258-mile circuit in the Shell Reynard Ford. Second-fastest was Marlboro Penske Mercedes driver Andre Ribeiro, who turned a 1:07.124 (121.101 mph) lap.
Third-fastest was Greg Moore, winner of the U.S. 500 two weeks ago at Michigan Speedway. Moore registered a 1:07.197 (120.970 mph) lap in the Players Indeck reynard Mercedes.
Fourth in practice was series points leader and defending Miller Lite 200 champion Alex Zanardi, who recorded a 1:07.274 lap (120.831 mph) in the Target Reynard Honda. Fifth-quickest was Richie Hearn in the Budweiser Ralph's Swift Ford at 1:07.315 (120.758 mph). Al Unser Jr., Dario Franchitti, Scott Pruett, Mark Blundell and Jimmy Vasser rounded out the top 10.
A hot, hazy sky prevailed during the session and temperatures are expected to be in the high 80's to low 90's with high humidity for this afternoon's 2:30 p.m. qualifying session. The session will be split into two groups, with the slower cars from this morning's practice out at 2:30 p.m. and the quicker cars at 3:15 p.m.
Sunday's race is scheduled for a 2 p.m. ET start and will be broadcast on a tape delayed basis on ABC Television, in the United States, at 4 p.m.
