EIGHTH ROW START FOR TEAM KOOL GREEN
1998 CART FedEx Championship: Round 12 - Michigan - 25 July, 14:18:43
BROOKLYN, Mich., - Team KOOL Green drivers Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti qualified 15th and 16th respectively and will start from the eighth row at Michigan Speedway for tomorrow's running of the U.S. 500 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Mexico's Adrian Fernandez won the first pole position of his career today, clocking a 31.370-second lap at 229.519 mph. Fernandez will share the front row with Jimmy Vasser, who circled the 2-mile oval in 31.461 seconds at 228.856 mph. Richie Hearn was third fastest with a lap of 31.546 seconds at 228.238 mph.
Tracy and Franchitti did not have the best setup for today's single-car qualifying session. Franchitti's time was 31.987 seconds (225.091 mph), while Tracy was only a little quicker around the superspeedway at 31.984 seconds (225.113 mph).
Tomorrow's 250-lap race will be broadcast live on ABC-TV.
PAUL TRACY, #26 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (15th with a lap-time of 31.984 seconds at 225.113 mph)
"Our speed wasn't very good today. It was disappointing for both of the KOOL cars. We ran good in practice but couldn't get it to go well in qualifying. We got the gears wrong or the downforce level wrong. It's going to be tough starting from where we are. But it's a long race with a lot of laps."
DARIO FRANCHITTI, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD/HONDA/FIRESTONE: (16th with a lap-time of 31.987 seconds at 225.091 mph)
"That was all she had. I was flat out the whole way around and tried to scrub off as little speed as possible. It's a long race tomorrow - attrition will play a big part - and we're reasonably confident with how the car runs in traffic."
