Brooklyn, MI (July 22, 1998) -- The Marlboro Pole Award rollover bonus went unclaimed for the 17th consecutive event at Toronto, meaning that the potential Marlboro Pole Award payout at the U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota is a record $295,000, including $10,000 for winning the pole and $285,000 in rollover funds.

The U.S. 500 Presented by Toyota marks more than one year since the rollover bonus, which grows at a rate of $15,000 per event until a victory from the pole is recorded, was last claimed by Alex Zanardi (Target Reynard Honda) at Cleveland in 1997. Including the $100,000 winner's purse, the potential payout for a victory from the pole at Michigan Speedway is $395,000.

Jimmy Vasser (Target Reynard Honda) won from the pole in the Inaugural U.S. 500 at Michigan Speedway in 1996, and there have been three previous victories from the pole in 500-mile events at Michigan Speedway, by Mario Andretti (1984), Michael Andretti (1987) and Rick Mears (1991).
