JOURDAIN JR. RETIRES IN MICHIGAN
Herdez-backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr. was forced to retire from the U.S. 500 due to a drive shaft problem. Jourdain Jr. completed 80 laps of the 250-lap race. He entered the pits to allow his crew to fix the car, but finally the team decided to retire.
Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #19 Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing Team: "The right rear CV joint broke and although we could continue, the team decided to not to do so. The car has too much downforce and it is hard to drive under those conditions. The only thing that I could do was to follow the field. That's why it was better to retire."
Antonio Marron, Motorsports Director of the Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing Team: "Unfortunately we had a mechanical failure and after P. J. (Jones) passed Michel, loosing the draft was terrible because you loose all the speed. Michel was running at his own pace and this unexpected failure disappointed us very much."
