MAX PAPIS -7- Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth - 3rd Fastest - "We are not cruising out there. It's tough. When someone is out there like Michael, pushing hard, you have to use everything you have to stay with him. Of course the draft helps you a little bit but it's not like a 24-hour race where you can drive at 70-percent. You go from driving 100-percent to driving maybe 95-percent." IS THE ACTION OUT THERE ON THE TRACK HAIR RAISING AT TIMES? "Overtaking on the outside and inside is part of our racing. We have not seen it in a while, but it is part of our racing. But everyone here respects one in other and you know you are going very fast. I don't want to say you are careful but if someone is going to go by you then they go by you." WHAT ARE YOUR INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF HOW THE RACE IS GOING TO UNFOLD? "Last year there were a lot of lead changes but I wasn't doing any of them. Ford has been developing very strong engines for this track and I think that come Sunday we are going o be very good."

BRYAN HERTA -8- Shell Ford-Cosworth - 20th Fastest - "Our car feels really good. Our time is not indicative of the potential of the car. I think we have a car capable of sitting in the front two or three rows. The Shell car's time doesn't look as good as the car feels. I am looking forward to qualifying tomorrow. I am pretty pumped."

MICHAEL ANDRETTI -6- K Mart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth - 10th Fastest - "You have to hold your breath all weekend here. The Handford Device makes it a lot more like racing at Talladega. You have to rely on drafting a lot more here with this wing. Every driver definitely has to respect each other here with all the wheel-to-wheel racing going on. Everyone will have to drive like they did last year. That was some of the best racing I have seen with the conditions the way they were last year for 500 miles."

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI -11- Big K Ford-Cosworth - 5th Fastest - "We slowly got better today. The car was very good and solid on full tanks at the end of the session with 50 laps on the tires. The car reacts very differently on Firestones. We are still learning how the new tires work with our superspeedway setup. We plan to keep on with the momentum we have thus far this season and score some points. If you want to win the race you have to finish first."

ADRIAN FERNANDEZ -40- Tecate/Quaker State Ford - 25th Fastest - "We are struggling right now and we don't know why. We have no idea what is wrong with the car, or even which way to go in order to improve it. I have no downforce on the car. It is so weird. I don't have a racecar right now. We are usually very good here at Michigan but for some reason, so far this weekend, we are not."

P.J. JONES -20- Visteon Ford-Cosworth - 28th Fastest - "We didn't test here, so we came off the truck a little behind the rest of the guys here today. We are struggling a little today. It took us three-quarters of the session to get a good handle on the car but we are improving. The car definitely got a little better and I know we are capable of running well here."

MICHEL JOURDAIN, JR -19- Herdez Viva Mexico Ford-Cosworth - 35th Fastest - "We are not running well here today. I know we can run better but we just can't seem to get a handle on the setup. We are scrubbing a lot of speed off on the turns and are slow down the straights. We tested a month ago and I had hoped we learned a bit, and I think we did, but we just have not been able to translate that into speed today."
