Mexican driver Michel Jourdain Jr. qualified 20th with his backup car after suffering an accident in the morning practice session. The Herdez backed driver did his best lap (20.708 seconds) with his last lap.

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #19 Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing Team: "I feel much better. Regarding the car, we used a 1999 package on a 1997 Lola chassis. This was the first time on the year that we run it and the crew worked hard to put the same setting on it than the one we had on my primary car. Unfortunately, my backup car developed more push than the one we had on my primary, but the engine, brakes, etc. were ok. We had many things brand new on it and obviously, we did not have time to test them today. We still have a lot of things to work on it."

Antonio Marron, Motorsports Director of the Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing Team: "Michel did very well, considering he had to overcome an accident. We will work further to try to get in the warm-up a competitive car."
