Last Friday, Herdez backed driver Michel Jourdain Jr. wrapped his two-day testing session at Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex for the March 21 Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami Presented by Toyota, the opening event on the 1999 CART FedEx Championship Series.

Jourdain Jr. ran his best lap at 206.897 mph. (26.1 seconds) in his new Herdez/Ford-Cosworth/Lola Champ. In the morning, the Huntingdon-built Lola chassis showed a lot of potential and the team were making progress and learning about this new chassis. However, a vault spring broken in the engine forced Michel to pit, asking for a fresh engine.

Michel Jourdain Jr., Car #19 Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing: "It was disappointing, we were making a lot of progress and then the engine broke. When the team mounted a second engine, they decided to make some adjustments, but when I drove the car, the changes did not give the results expected. Thus, we had to go back to the settings that we used in the morning."

He added: "We are still learning about the car and the team will have to work hard in the shop (located in Plainfield, Illinois), for the season opener. The car still has a lot of secrets to discover, but I think we will give a good performance during the race weekend at Homestead."
