Interested spectators at this weekend's race included Indy Racing League driver Gil de Ferran, Formula One star Juan Pablo Montoya, and Indy Racing rookie sensation Tomas Scheckter. Roberto Moreno and Raul Boesel were also seen strolling the area behind the pits.

Saturday's qualifying will be divided into three segments. The first segment will be a ten-minute open practice followed by a ten minutes of downtime. At the conclusion of the down time, a 40 minute qualifying session will be held with 30 minutes of guaranteed green time.

The official lap distance is 1.387 miles. Fuel allotment is 81.0 US gallons. The maximum lap interval for pit stops will be 42 laps. Due to the narrow pit lane, the pit lane speed has been lowered to 35 mph for this event. The Chief Steward has declared a maximum time for this race of two hours and twelve minutes. The tire allocation for this event has been increased to 8 sets per entrant.

There are two racing boutiques within walking distance of the circuit. TC Racing, located just outside circuit along the main straight, is at 40 Biscayne Blvd. Auto Craze, which has the better selection of the two, is at 100 S.E. 1st Street. While both stores cater to the serious racer, Auto Craze has an interesting offering of items autographed by Juan Pablo Montoya.
